On the Economy

The Dow was shaken up this week with a 1000 drop in points. Was it Greece, No, a trading mistake, No…

The Greek debt crisis. The fall of the euro. The collapse of the European order. Debt contagion hits the market. Never mind that, important as the Greek crisis is, nothing whatsoever changed in the Greek debt situation at 2:15 p.m. It was the explanation closest at hand, and it’s the job of the press to explain what was quickly turning into the fastest crash in U.S. market history.

Let’s blame it on technology, no? Or was it the trader who entered a “b” for billion instead of an “m” for million in a trade possibly involving Procter & Gamble a component in the Dow.

….

20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins
Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression.

Economy Gains Impetus as U.S. Adds 290,000 Jobs
Despite growing unease in the financial markets, the American economy is gathering steam, adding an unexpectedly large number of jobs last month.

The Trillion-Dollar Question
What happened Thursday, May 5, to cause the stock market’s precipitous fall is truly the trillion-dollar question that no one can seem to answer.

How can the market go, on a random Thursday afternoon, completely insane? The story which is emerging centers on old, boring Procter & Gamble, as can be seen in the PG chart from this afternoon.

On Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook:

@CnnMoney, @davidkirkpatric (has written a book, “The Facebook Effect) and @Techcrunch have some very interesting articles related. Find them HERE.

A short excerpt from the book below:

“You just saw my apartment,” Zuckerberg replied. “I don’t really need any money. And anyway, I don’t think I’m ever going to have an idea this good again.” Viacom (VIA) would try money nonetheless, with a cash offer of $800 million and provisions that could make it worth as much as $1.5 billion. But like many other suitors, the Viacom executives discovered they were dealing with a formidable character. If his invention’s early appeal was at a freshman level, exploiting the desire of college students to check each other out, his professed ambition was much higher: to change the world.

Zynga and Facebook have had an extremely symbiotic and mutually lucrative relationship to date, but after the social network tried to use its weight to hold its leading social gaming application maker captive, Zynga looks to be mad as hell.

I’m not denying the iPhone 4G isn’t a real working prototype or the validity of Gizmodo’s technical review on the iPhone; just briefly pointing out different possibilities that Apple can adopt to get more publicity.

Gizmodo reports that the new iPhone 4G with all it’s coolness has been found in lost in a bar in Redwood City, camouflaged to look like an iPhone 3GS. With fanboys emotionally attached to anything Apple, it’s not that difficult to equate this being a publicity stunt from Apple. Below you’ll find an excerpt from the TUAW blog to get you up to speed.

More on the ongoing saga of the wayward next-gen iPhone. Gizmodo just posted their version of the story behind the story: They say that an Apple employee who works on the iPhone’s baseband technology left the mysterious phone at the Gourmet Haus Staudt, a Redwood City bar and restaurant that’s not far from Apple’s campus.

Gizmodo goes onto say that Apple-connected John Gruber—from Daring Fireball—says that Apple has indeed lost a prototype iPhone and they want it back:

So I called around, and I now believe this is an actual unit from Apple — a unit Apple is very interested in getting back.

The usual suspects and sites that support Apple – All people i admire, but when it comes to talking Apple we all know which side they are on.

Insighful comments on Gizmodo’s blog could make you wonder about what’s really going on.

I have no doubt that this is a genuine Apple product. I seriously doubt that this was an accident, though. Apple leaked this on purpose.

Steve Jobs still really hates Eric Schmidt and doesn’t want to lose any sales to the Incredible or the EVO, both of which have yet to be released, and both of which are looking pretty damn good if I must say. You guys don’t think it’s just coincidence that this came about THE DAY that the pre-order page for the Droid Incredible goes live, do you now? Apple’s hoping that consumers in the market for a new phone will skip the Google options and wait for the new iPhone. Steve’s a smart sumbitch. He knows what he’s doing.

Also, the Micro-SIM card leads me to believe that the new iPhone is still going to be an At&t only thing, seeing as they’re the one’s providing the SIMs for the 3G iPad.

And if we haven’t seen it by now, we probably won’t see a CDMA iPhone ever, because Apple’s probably going to save their R&D resources for when LTE is fully up and running.

/secretly wondering if giz is in on it

and..

I mean, the iPhone has a freaking GPS, for Christ’s sake — Apple would have tracked this bitch down months ago, if they were really concerned it would fall into unapproved hands.

or..

And do you really think a lowly 27 year old software underling would be given access to Apple’s biggest secret since the iPad?

What do we really know about what’s going on with the men behind the curtain; one things for sure is that they want to WIN. Certainly Apple wants to make headlines all over the world and competition in business brings out the cleverest strategies. You decide, do you want to believe the hype or do a little digging of your own?

Lots of interesting news this week in tech, briefly amongst those Twitter has acquired Tweetie and helped Rim with their Blackberry client. However this post concentrates on Adobe and Apple’s recent battle with web domination. I have selfish reasons why i wrote this post mainly because I started out in this business as a freelancer developing and creating with Adobe Flash/Flex.

Of course I’ve come a long way since then and embraced different technologies, but i still love Flash – a tool that has given me so much in my early days – Reminiscent of my early days, I’d just like to give back something in lieu of what’s happening.

Catch up with what’s happening:

The Twitter Platform’s Inflection Point

New iPhone Developer Agreement Bans the Use of Adobe’s Flash-to-iPhone Compiler

Steve Jobs Has Just Gone Mad

Is Twitter going to pull a bait and switch on developers?

Apple Slaps Developers In The Face

I’d like to concentrate on the second and last links in the above lists, bear in mind these are people whom i have alot of respect for. In reference to what John Gruber said on his blog the other day prior to the release of the iPhone OS 4 SDK & iPhone Developer Program License Agreement.

3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs.

and the new version:

3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).

Gruber goes on with an update which i found his perspective extremely interesting:

UPDATE: To be clear, I do not think that Apple is singling out Flash CS5. I do think, though, that Flash CS5’s cross-compiler epitomizes the sort of meta-frameworks Apple is not going to allow. Same goes for MonoTouch. What Apple doesn’t want — and as we see now, is not going to allow — is for anyone other than Apple to define the framework for native iPhone apps. What Apple is saying here is, if you’re going to write a native iPhone app, then you need to target our platform; if you want to do something else, then target the iPhone with an optimized web app. I.e., the iPhone OS supports two software platforms: Cocoa Touch and the web. Apple isn’t going to let anyone else build a meta-platform on top of Cocoa Touch. I think this comment at Hacker News from “raganwald” nails Apple’s perspective on this.

My reactions, and introducing the brave lone wolf, Lee Brimelow:

While i don’t disagree with John and the comments on Hacker News I will say that the Adobe and Apple are two companies that have worked side by side for a long while now and you wouldn’t expect underhanded moves like this – which to me are clear signs of Apple wanting to dominate and control the market. All at the cost of pursuing the demise of it’s allies..

I can’t help but sharing a golden nugget from Lee Brimelow’s reaction to what’s happening with the new iPhone 4.0 SDK:

Many of Adobe’s supporters have mentioned that we should discontinue the Creative Suite products on OS X as a form of retaliation. Again, this is something that Adobe would never consider in a million years. We are not looking to abuse our loyal users and make them pawns for the sake of trying to hurt another company. What is clear is that Apple most definitely would do that sort of thing as is evidenced by their recent behavior.

It’s certainly something to think about, and i agree with Brimelow here; Adobe would never consider that move in a zillion years and it’s plain to see who is the more powerful force, but does that give them the right to abuse other people’s loyalty?

Business is always cutthroat, there’s no doubt about that and I feel Adobe should have seen this coming especially after Flash wasn’t supported on the iPad. Nevertheless the show must go on..

I’d just like to thank Lee for his outright response and courageous stand, not every developer has the guts to come out in the open like that. I’ll definitely be purchasing Flash CS5 and putting it to good use in some of my applications in the future.

It’s not about ego. Really. If it was ego, I’d be telling you about my awesome… oh, never mind.
Bruce Perens

We’ve all seen various egos in our daily life, with our bosses, coworkers and friends. However this short rant isn’t about the human ego (that’s a whole topic in itself), it’s simply about information which eventually translates to 0’s and 1’s (the matrix effect) and in its most restricted technical meaning, information is an ordered sequence of symbols.

Ask yourself this question. Why am I on Twitter, or FriendFeed or Google Reader? For most people it’s about easy access to the stream of information that surrounds us. Sure we’re there to engage also but the gobs of information always come first.

That said to me the end and b all isn’t just influence, which at times can be missappropriated, misunderstood even over-rated at times. It’s just about absorbing good old information.

So as we journey in this thing called life, take a look around and start appreciating the information around you. Information will never turn on you when you most need it, it will always be there 24/7/365.

Absorb, learn and respect it.

Firefox is great, but i’m not interested in all the add-ons and such that slow a browser down.

What I’m interested in is performance. As i scower through the web with my many tabs open i want to be able to interact with them quickly as i cycle and rearrange tab by tab.

No other browser has yet given me the ability to browse the web the way Google Chrome has. Firefox doesn’t even come close when it comes down to the tiniest little details. Lets talk about those details, see if you agree with me?

1. Tab / Memory Management:

Chrome uses much less memory and system resources than many other browsers out there. This is because of the Multi-process Model built into Chrome.

Tabs in Chrome: are easy to drag and drop from screen to screen. You can pop any individual tab out of its parent browser window, rearrange the order and even pop it back. Sure Firefox and other browsers give you the same functionality, but Chromes experience is far more pleasurable and functional. Try opening up different tabs and playing around with them, then try Chrome tabs.

Closing Tabs: When i want close tabs i can right click and close all tabs in Chrome. That’s a normal option in pretty much any new age browser, however Chrome’s intuitive interface really understands the needs of the user. For example say i have 10 tabs open and i wanted to close them one by one starting from the right. In Chrome all i have to do is start with the last one on the right and the others move into place for me to cancel without having the user reposition the mouse cursor.

Multi Threaded Tabs: If one tab crashes it won’t affect the others. Google Chrome will allow you to close the tab that is causing problem and switching to other tabs is easy. This is achieved by the multi-threading as each tab has it’s own memory process.

2. Speed / Performance:

Boot Up: When you start chrome it loads up in about a second or two. I’m on a Windows XP, with about 3 GB ram and it’s start-up speed is just awesome! Far far better than Firefox’s or any of the other browsers out there.

Speed: Chrome renders pages much faster than any browser out there, which helps the user get to what he/she wants to read in the quickest amount of time, even with many other tabs open.

Extensions: Chrome extensions like Googles url shortener, Google Reader install without any fuss or having to restart the browser.

You know the engineers over at Google have tested other browsers and spotted their flaws. It’s easy to see that they have taken into consideration every little detail into their version of the best browser in the world.

After all every millisecond counts, don’t you think?

Ever wonder what makes all those mashups possible? It’s access to the huge amounts of raw data out there for people to create open source applications that we can learn from and interact with and use for our research purposes.

There’s a swarm of data out there, personal, government, economic, weather, news and still so much linked data (data with connections) is still not available to us. Imagine if we had access to all the data in the world to play with and create super useful applications? It’s certainly something to think about.

However, the only slight problem is:

We will need tonnes of people with enough criteria to make sense of this huge amounts of information if they are made public. Unfortunately the (lack of proper) education in quite some countries is not helping (at all) in that direction. ~ Gilbert Martinez Gamote

and the semi solution to that might be:

As a programmer I get really excited about mashing up data from different sources, but what it really needs is a single application that automatically combines this data so anyone can do it, at the moment it’s still quite technical. ~ Matthew Wilcoxson

We’ve come a long way since Tim Berners-Lee on the next Web in 2009 and we’re sure to see advances in technology helping others reuse that data in a easier, less technical way.

This has everyone to do with us as data is a part of our lives Tim Berners Lee goes on to say. It’s not just huge companies and institutions that come to mind, it’s your normal human being who wants interopability between social networks on the web.

Now that’s an idea worth talking about…

Notice the cute icons before the links? Try hovering over them and you’ll get a preview too. All thanks to a nifty plugin called Apture, be sure to check that out.
